I made the helix as an octagon made 1/2" plywood strips with the ends cut at an 11.25º angle. The radius it accommodates is 26 inches. It took a bit of math to figure out how to cut it. My miter saw has that angle setting, so it was pretty easy. Length of the board is the critical factor.
