The splice plates are 1/2" Baltic birch plywood that were available as approximately 20" square scraps that I bought cheap at Menard's. Because they were a little shorter than the pieces being splice together, I wasn't able to get a full trapezoid out of them. It didn't matter. They are just holding the helix together.
