Luckily, I found a spare jack post in the basement when I cleaned it out after moving in. I could use that jack post to support the beam while making the change and if a dial indicator with a magnetic base was attached to it, I could monitor any elevation changes and get things back at the same height they were before. Notice that I sprayed the beam with galvanizing paint in the work area and will continue this across the room.
